CCTV buying guide for homes and businesses

More cameras is not always better security. Coverage, image quality at night, recording time and power backup matter more. A practical checklist.

A good CCTV system answers one question: when something happens, will you see it clearly and have the recording? Use this checklist before you buy.

Plan coverage first

Start with entry points: gates, doors, windows and parking. Then add the perimeter and areas where valuables are kept. A site walk-through usually shows that well-placed cameras beat a large number of badly placed ones.

Check night performance

Most incidents happen at night. Ask about infrared range or colour night-vision and whether there is enough lighting where faces need to be recognised.

Recording time and storage

The recorder's hard drive decides how many days of footage you keep. More cameras and higher resolution need more storage.

Remote viewing

Modern systems let you watch live and recorded video on your phone. This needs a stable internet connection at the site and a secure setup with strong passwords.

Keep it powered

A camera system without backup power goes dark exactly when the power goes off. A small UPS or inverter keeps cameras and the recorder running.

Maintenance

Clean lenses, check angles, test recording and update passwords every few months. Trivox includes these checks in its maintenance plans.
